Lucknow:
The position of Gram Pradhan in Uttar Pradesh is considered one of the most influential roles at the village level, responsible for steering development activities and implementing government schemes. As the state prepares for the next round of Panchayat elections, many are curious about the qualifications required to contest for this post and the monthly remuneration offered to village chiefs.
Eligibility to Become Gram Pradhan
According to the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission, the eligibility criteria are straightforward:
- Minimum age: 21 years
- Must be a registered voter of the same Gram Panchayat
- No mandatory educational qualification—both literate and illiterate individuals can contest as long as they fulfill basic conditions
- Candidate must be mentally sound
- Candidate must not be convicted in any criminal case
These conditions make the Gram Pradhan post accessible to a wide section of the rural population, unlike many other elections that require specific educational standards.
Honorarium: Only ₹5,000 Per Month
Sharing his experience, Amit — the Pradhan of Malkpura village in Jalaun district — told Navbharat Times Online that a Gram Pradhan in Uttar Pradesh receives only an honorarium of ₹5,000 per month, not a salary.
There are:
- No additional allowances
- No pension benefits
- No medical or travel support
However, if a Pradhan passes away while in office, their family is entitled to government compensation.
Voter List Revision for 2026 Elections
The State Election Commission has recently revised the schedule for updating the voter list for the upcoming three-tier Panchayat elections. As per the new timeline, the final voter list will be published on February 6, 2026.
The revision was made due to delays in preparing the draft list, disposing of objections, and reviewing copies.
The Gram Pradhan’s role remains vital for grassroots democracy, but the low honorarium continues to spark debate about whether village leaders are being adequately compensated for the responsibility they shoulder.
