Good News for Delhi Residents: ₹2,406 Crore Upgrade to Ensure 24×7 Water Supply for 22 Lakh People

In a major step toward resolving Delhi’s long-standing water scarcity, the Chanderwal Water Treatment Plant is set for a massive expansion worth ₹2,406 crore. The upgrade aims to provide round-the-clock water supply to nearly 22 lakh residents, accounting for around 11% of the capital’s population.

Capacity to Increase From 90 MGD to 105 MGD

Currently, the Chanderwal plant produces 90 million gallons per day (MGD). However, the demand in the connected areas has risen significantly. To meet the growing requirement, the plant’s capacity will be enhanced to 105 MGD, ensuring adequate supply to densely populated constituencies.

Approval Granted in CM Rekha Gupta’s Cabinet Meeting

The project received official approval during a recent cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The plant supplies water to several key parts of Delhi, including:

  • Patel Nagar
  • Chandni Chowk
  • Matia Mahal
  • Ballimaran
  • Parts of Sadar Bazar
  • Model Town
  • Karol Bagh
  • Rajendra Nagar
  • RK Puram assembly areas

Authorities aim to ensure that residents in these regions receive uninterrupted water service once the upgrade is completed.

21 New Underground Water Reservoirs Planned

To support the increased water production, the Delhi Jal Board has proposed building 21 new underground water reservoirs.
Key features of the plan include:

  • All reservoirs will be interlinked with each other
  • Each reservoir will be connected directly to the Chanderwal plant
  • A 1,000 km network of new pipelines will be laid for smooth distribution

These reservoirs and pipelines will strengthen Delhi’s water storage and delivery system, reducing shortages and managing peak demand efficiently.
