Lucknow | December 3, 2025: Mumbai registered a commanding 98-run victory over Assam in their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 group-stage encounter, courtesy of a blistering century from Sarfaraz Khan and a sensational five-wicket haul by skipper Shardul Thakur.
Sarfaraz Khan Smashes 47-Ball Century
Assam captain Riyan Parag won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that backfired spectacularly. Mumbai posted a massive 220/4 in 20 overs, powered by an explosive knock from Sarfaraz Khan.
Sarfaraz hammered an unbeaten 100 off just 47 balls, striking 8 fours and 7 sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 212.77. His aggressive strokeplay dismantled Assam’s bowling attack and set up a daunting target.
Shardul Thakur’s Fiery Spell Destroys Assam
Chasing 221, Assam crumbled under pressure and were bundled out for 122 in 19.1 overs. Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur produced a dream spell, taking 5 wickets for 23 runs in just 3 overs.
Thakur’s opening burst was devastating—he claimed 4 wickets in his first 7 deliveries, including the crucial dismissal of Riyan Parag. His sharp swing and disciplined line left Assam with no room to recover.
Struggles Continue for Shardul in Team India
Despite such impactful domestic performances, Shardul Thakur has not been able to cement a place in India’s white-ball squads. He last featured in an ODI during the 2023 World Cup against Bangladesh and played his most recent T20I in 2022 versus West Indies. Even in Tests, his opportunities have been irregular, often moving in and out of the squad.
Shardul Returns to Mumbai Indians for IPL 2026
Ahead of IPL 2026, Shardul Thakur has been traded from Lucknow Super Giants to Mumbai Indians, marking his return to the franchise. Since making his IPL debut in 2015, he has played 105 matches, picking up 107 wickets and scoring 325 runs.
With a stellar all-round performance in the domestic circuit, Shardul has once again reminded selectors of his match-winning potential.
