IMDb Rated 8.7, Even More Intense Than ‘The Family Man’: The Spy Who Returned Home After Six Years

For fans of undercover agents and espionage thrillers, the web series ‘The Bureau’ is a must-watch. With a stellar IMDb rating of 8.7, this French series tells the story of real-life inspired intelligence operations, blending suspense, action, and human drama. If you enjoyed ‘The Family Man’, this series will capture your imagination even more.

About ‘The Family Man’ Season 3
Manoj Bajpayee returns as Srikanth Tiwari in ‘The Family Man Season 3’, premiering on OTT on 21 November. This season showcases Tiwari on his most dangerous mission yet, with both his professional credibility and family at stake. The season also introduces Jaideep Ahlawat and Nimrat Kaur, making it one of the most popular and critically acclaimed spy thrillers in India.

Introducing ‘The Bureau’
However, when it comes to real-life inspired spy stories, nothing matches ‘The Bureau’. Originally a French espionage thriller created by Éric Rochant and produced by Canal+ and Oligarcks Productions, the show revolves around agents of France’s DGSE (Directorate-General for External Security). The series currently spans 5 seasons and 50 episodes, tracing the daily life and covert operations of deep-cover agents working in high-risk regions, especially in North Africa and the Middle East.

Cast and Premiere
‘The Bureau’ first aired on 27 April 2015 in France and later released on Amazon Prime Video on 17 June 2016. Mathieu Kassovitz, Florence Loiret-Caille, and Jonathan Zaccaï play pivotal roles, bringing a mix of intensity, strategy, and human emotion to the series.

The Storyline
The narrative follows undercover agent Guillaume Debailly, codenamed ‘Malotru,’ who returns to Paris after six years undercover in Damascus. Upon his return, he faces the challenge of reintegrating into a normal life while navigating relationships with his daughter, ex-wife, and former colleagues. His past mission complicates his personal life further when he discovers Nadia, his former girlfriend in Damascus, is also in Paris.

The first season focuses on Debailly’s struggle to balance his double life and restore connections with his family. Subsequent seasons expand the story, introducing Marina Loïsso, a specialist going undercover in Tehran to gather intelligence on Iran’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, Debailly is promoted to Deputy Director and faces internal and external threats, including a violent French jihadist, creating high-stakes drama throughout the series.

English Remake: ‘The Agency’
In 2024, Michael Fassbender starred in an English adaptation of ‘The Bureau’ titled ‘The Agency’, which premiered its first season on IMDb rating 7.4. However, the original director clarified at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival that the remake has no association with him or Canal+.
